SIA Hermana in Armed Forces Receives Distinguished Award

New York, NY - February 29, 2008

Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha, Inc. (SIA) would like to congratulate Captain Ariel Batungbacal, H. Pikaki for receiving the Captain of the Year Award for her entire base, composed of 441 Captains! Ariel Batungbacal is a Captain in the United States Air Force (USAF) stationed in Los Angeles, CA. She recently returned from her second tour of duty to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Originally from Atlanta, GA, Captain Batungbacal graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park with a B.A. in Chinese, and a B.A. in Government and Politics in 2001. In 2005, she graduated from Norwich University with a M.A. in Diplomacy (focusing on Chinese foreign policy). She has been stationed across the globe, to include the Republic of Korea, Italy, the Middle East and North Africa. Regardless of the intensity of her work, Captain Batungbacal feels strongly about being a civic leader within the community. For example, she is an active member within the Junior League of Los Angeles (JLLA), a non-profit whose mission is women building better communities. Additionally, she is heavily involved in leadership forums to train more effective volunteers for the JLLA/LA Junior Chamber of Commerce's Volunteer Leadership Forum 2007, undergraduate advisor to SIA’s Alpha Zeta Chapter/California State University at Dominguez Hills, and co-chair to a project teaching Aviva Children and Family Services' at-risk teenage girls about the wonders of the globe.

Captain Batungbacal continues to exemplify true leadership, commitment and courage and SIA could not be more proud to have such an amazing hermana!

 

GLORIA GARAYUA ON GREY’S ANATOMY

SIA Member Featured as New Intern on Grey's Anatomy

On September 27, 2007 the new season of “Grey’s Anatomy” began featuring a new set of interns among them, SIA’s very own Gloria Garayua, Hermana Energica.

Gloria is an alumna of SIA’s Xi chapter at C.W. Post Long Island University where she graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting. She double majored in production and design with a concentration in voice and dance. Since her graduation, Gloria has perfected her acting abilities and had roles in theatre, television and film. She has appeared in films like the 2005 hit comedy, “Fun With Dick and Jane” as well as “Cold Case”, “Strong Medicine”, “NYPD Blue” and “Six Feet Under.” Most recently, Gloria has appeared on the popular television show, “Grey's Anatomy” in a recurring role as Intern Graciela working alongside Resident Izzie Stevens (played by Katherine Heigl).

While Gloria is an amazing actress she also has other talents; she is an intermediate classical pianist. Gloria also serves as a role model to the Latino community and was honored as such during the 2005 Bronx Puerto Rican Day Parade where she served as Grand Marshall.

 

SIA FOUNDING MOTHER HONORED

New York, NY, September 12, 2007

Dora M. Abreu, Founding Mother of Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha, Inc., and chartering Hermana of the Gamma Gamma Chapter (Graduate/Alumnae Chapter of Metro NY/NJ Area) has been named one of 10 inspirational women by Maybelline for making a difference in the community through education. As one of the winners in the Empowerment Through Education Program, Dora will be featured in the November 5th issue of People and the December issues of People en Español and Essence magazines. The winners not only received the opportunity in taking part in photo shoots for these publications, their achievements will be honored at a Nov. 1 luncheon and each will receive a $10,000 donation to the charity of her choice. "It's exciting and humbling," said Dora Maria Abreu, 39, of Washington Heights, NY who won for her work mentoring teachers and developing scholarships at her alma mater, SUNY Stony Brook, for female students in the fields of engineering, science and mathematics. Dora will donate her award money to the program FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), an organization that fosters children's interest in technology.

Ms. Abreu has always given back to her community, whether through one of the various organizations she is affiliated with or independently. She is not only a life time member to Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha, Inc., SHPE, NSBE, SWE, NAACP, and the SUNY Stony Brook Alumni Association - all organizations that are committed to giving back to the community but she also serves on various boards which are actively doing educational programs nationwide and even internationally. She sits on her local community board and is very active in mentoring and tutoring high school and college students in areas such as reading, math, engineering, and technology. She has created her own computer workshops for students of all levels and even adults. Recently, she took part in a good will trip to the Dominican Republic where part of her contribution was both creating and conducting training that taught teachers how to use and troubleshoot computers and how to use them in their classrooms effectively.

Dora Maria Abreu has given to educate the youth and the community in an area where the resources are limited. Dora Maria Abreu is an inspiration to our organization and to the community as a whole. We are so proud that Maybelline has recognized her accomplishments.

SIA FOUNDING MOTHER NOMINATED TO THE 2006 "100 MOST IMPORTANT HISPANICS in TECHNOLOGY AND BUSINESS" LIST


New York-Feb. 27, 2006
Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha, Inc, (SIA) a Hispanic philanthropic sorority, has had one of its founding mother nominated to the "100 Most Important Hispanics in Technology and Business" list for 2006 by Hispanic Engineer & Information Technology magazine. The honoree -- Dora Maria Abreu, Founder 1990, was selected for her outstanding performance in the field of technology and the community at large. This is the first selection for Abreu for this magazine, but the third of distinctions that accompany: Top Latinas List 2005 June/August 2005, and El Diaro / La Prensa One of the 50 Outstanding Latinas of the Year 2004 as well as getting highlighted in Hispanic Network Magazine June 2005 and SHAPE Magazine - Local Hero Article March 2004.
"We are happy to see Ms. Abreu be recognized for her achievements," said Suheil Pimentel, Vice President of Marketing for SIA,. "in a field typically dominated by men she has proven to be an example for not only Hispanic women but all young women striving to succeed in the technology field."
Abreu, currently a Technology Analyst for Goldman Sachs, has not only served as a example among the technology community but is a role model for the over 500 members of the SIA organization. As one of the organization founders, she also holds a seat on the Board of Directors for the sorority's Solidaridad Inspiracion Amistad Community Foundation, committed to scholarship, service and professional development within Latino communities.


Hispanic Engineer & Information Technology chooses honorees based on their achievements in the field of technology, their leadership in the organizations they represent and their community service. This list includes many of the nation's highest achieving Hispanic executives, managers and researchers in industry, government and academia.

Dora is also considered the Founding Mother of the Zeta Chapter since she is the women responsible for bringing our Chapter's Founding Hermanas into the organization.


" RED CARPET HERMANA: GLORIA GARAYUA HERMANA ENERGICA IN FUN WITH DICK AND JANE"

Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha, Inc. would like to congratulate Gloria Garayua, Hermana Energica, on her outstanding work in the movie "Fun with Dick and Jane." The movie is a remake from the 1977 film where a couple, here played by Jim Carey and Téa Leoni, turn to robbery to pay their bills. Gloria plays the part of Blanca, a caretaker for the couples' young son. Other notables in the movie include Alec Baldwin and Angie Hermon.


Gloria is an alumna of our Xi chapter at C.W. Post Long Island University, from which she graduated Summa Cum Laude. Since her graduation she has had several theatre roles and has had notable guest appearances on shows such as Strong Medicine and Six Feet Under. This latest role is one of her biggest, however, we are sure that this won't be the only time we see Gloria on the Red Carpet.

"NIELSEN MEDIA RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED TO YADIRA GARCIA"

New York-- June 1, 2005 

Yadira Garcia, a student at New York University has been selected as one of two scholarship recipients to take part in a new certificate program offered through Nielsen Media Research. Jessica Mayorga, Interim Chief Executor of the Solidaridad Inspiración Amistad Community Foundation released a statement today congratulating Garcia on this honor. In the form of a broadcast, to the over 500 women who form Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha, Inc.- Garcia's sorority, she stated "On behalf of the National Association of Latino Fraternal Organizations and the Solidaridad Inspiración Amistad Community Foundation, I am pleased to announce that Yadira Garcia (H. Trinitaria) has been selected as a recipient of a Nielsen Media Research scholarship to cover full tuition for the Nielsen Certificate in TV Audience Measurement Program at NYU this summer." Nielsen Media Research extended this opportunity to promising students of color through NALFO and asked the SIA Foundation directly to carry out the distribution of the scholarship. We are very pleased that one of our own has earned this opportunity.

The scholarship, in the amount of $2,500, covers full tuition and fees for this new certificate program. Nielsen Media Research and New York University’s School of Continuing and Professional Studies joined forces to offer this unique training in TV audience measurement. Nielsen Media Research made two scholarships awards available to outstanding students of color who believe they have what it takes to launch a successful career in media research or other related field.

"Sister becomes first Hispanic recipient of the Time Inc. President's Award"

New York-- May 2005

Ms. Yexenia Gomez, Assistant Marketing Manager at InStyle magazine became the first Hispanic to ever receive the Time Inc. President’s Award. Ms. Gomez has been a part of the Consumer Marketing team at Time Inc. for 5 years. Her involvement in HOLA, a Hispanic mentoring program at Time Inc. made her the perfect candidate.

The program, in conjunction with Human Resources, matches seven junior level employees with seven mid level mentors. The mid level mentors are paired with their own mentors from senior level positions.

HOLA set out to create a professional network for Hispanic employees, increase retention rate of Hispanics at Time Inc., and provide awareness to top senior level executives of issues affecting the diverse populations at the company. Although HOLA was a mentoring pilot program, its initiatives were acknowledged at this year’s President’s Awards ceremony, by recognizing one of its members.

Yexenia, Hermana Guacariga, became a member of Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha, Inc in the Spring of 1997 at NYU, the sorority’s Phi chapter. She was very active with the Hispanic community while an undergraduate at New York University.
